Last week, we urged supporters to open their wallets for #GivingTuesday, a day to raise funds for charitable causes — our movie specifically.
Started in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation, Giving Tuesday has been a huge success for non-profits. By 2015, Giving Tuesday had spread to 98 countries and raised approximately $177 million! For a fiscally sponsored movie that uses grants and grassroots fundraising to fund film-making expenses, #GivingTuesday can make a huge difference.
2016 was the first year we participated. The funds we raised last November propelled Pioneers in Skirts into post-production — which is THE most expensive part of making a documentary film.
From blog & social media posts to in-person meetings, 2017 has been a year of educating people on what it will take to complete the film. We are at a point where we must pay professional teams to help fine-tune the edit, more specifically…
- Music Composition and Purchasing
- Professional voice-over Recording
- Sound Mixing
- Color Correction
- Graphics & Titles Design
- Legal & Insurance
Last week, we made a grassroots attempt to raise funds to pay for color correction and graphic & title designs for the film.
Ideally, since we’re making a film that will positively impact women and girls – today and into the future, we’d like to connect with philanthropic businesses wanting to play a role by funding or owning some of professional work efforts.
Since it all starts with making people aware of our need…we went outside the box and made our “ask” into a Pioneers in Skirts Instagram Story full of ‘behind the scenes’ of the film. Check it out below.
If you’re unfamiliar with Instagram “stories,” they are connected pictures and/or 14-second videos posted throughout the day.

Sadly, we didn’t meet our #GivingTuesday goal of being able to complete color correction and/or graphic work efforts, but it was a fun ride trying.
Many individuals were big givers and we thank those of you who supported us!
We were surprised and thankful to the abundance of social media shares and words of encouragement, and appreciate many of you for donating via our tax-deductible giving fiscal sponsor — for the 2nd or 3rd time! We are truly humbled.
It’s been a ginormous challenge to convince large philanthropic businesses to be part of this film. We are consistently told,
“We LOVE what you’re doing, but it’s not our company policy to give towards the making of a film.”
We aren’t giving up, though. We know that if a business leader were to watch and see just how powerful our current cut is, they’d want to find a way to change their company policy. This film must be finished. It must be seen.
One step at a time. We’ll get there.
